Speakers

Confirmed plenary speakers are Professor André Brink(Cape Town), Professor Derek Attridge (University of York), Professor Rosemary Jolly (Queen's University) and Professor Elleke Boehmer (Royal Holloway, University of London).

Professor André Brink

André Brink is a prolific writer of both fiction and theory, and is a Professor at Cape Town University. He has published both during and after apartheid, and had two of his novels banned by the South African government. He has been nominated for the Booker Prize twice and his books have been translated into 30 different languages. His publications include 'A Dry White Season', 'A Chain of Voices' and 'Writing in a State of Seige.'

Professor Derek Attridge:

Professor Attridge is Professor of English at York University. He was born in South Africa and much of his work is concerned with South African literature, including a volume on South African literature that he co-edited with Professor Rosemary Jolly. Additionally, his forthcoming monograph, J. M. Coetzee and the Ethics of Reading: Literature in the Event (2004) will shortly be published. Other recent publications include The Singularity of Literature (2004). Profesor Attridge has also produced much work on James Joyce.

Professor Elleke Boehmer:

Professor Boehmer is the Hildred Carlile Professor in Literatures in English, in the Department of English at Royal Holloway, University of London. Much of her research is concerned with postcolonialism, including South African literature. Professor Boehmer's publications include Colonial and Postcolonial Literature: Migrant Metaphors (Oxford UP, 1995) and Empire, the National, and the Postcolonial , 1890-1920 (Oxford UP, 2002). Additionally, she has co-edited collections of essays on the new South Africa.

Professor Rosemary Jolly:

Professor Jolly is a Professor of Literature at Queen's Universiy, Canada. Professor Jolly's research interests include postcolonial literature and theory, theories of violence and South African literature. She has co-edited a book on South African literature with Professor Attridge entitled Writing South Africa . Included in Professor Jolly's publications is Colonization, Violence and Narration in White South African Writing: Breyten Breytenbach, Andre Brink and J.M. Coetzee 1996).
